Wednesday, May 5, 2010

thanks for the article (www.businessminder.net)

The Entrepreneur Journey of a Business Minder has achieved PageRank of 3 after 3 months of work. There are a lot of arguments on Google PageRank. Some believe it is crucial to a website's traffic and search engine ranking, others think it is completely a waste of time to focus on Google PageRank.

.

What is PageRank?

.

Google PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the Internet. When one page links to another, it is casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that a page has, the more important the page is. Also, the importance of the page (PageRank) that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. To put it short, Google calculates a page's importance (PageRank) from

.

  • The number of websites linking to it
  • The importance (PageRank) of these websites linking to it
  • The relevancy of the pages linking to your site
  • The keywords that other sites use to link to your site

.

Different Types of Votes (Links)

.

Inbound Links

.

An inbound link is a link from another page on the web linking to a page on your website. This is sometimes referred as a BackLink, or one-way link. The more inbound links you have, the more votes you have, therefore, the higher PageRank you can possible achieve.

.

Outbound Links

.

An outbound link is a link linking to another page on the web from your website. Basically, if you have a link linking to our website, you are effectively casting a vote for us. However, outbound links are a drain on a site's overall PageRank. If you think about it this way, you are sharing your PageRank by linking to others. To counter this, try to make sure that the links are reciprocated(link exchange). Also, by adding rel="no follow" to your outbound links will ensure that search engines do not count these links as outbound links. Therefore, you won't leak PageRank.

.

To do this:

.

Link Text

.

Reciprocal Links

.

Reciprocal links are the results of exchanging links. The concept is simple - "you help me, I help you."

.

Facts

.

  • One-way inbound links play an important role in your PageRank.
  • Outbound links leak your PageRank. (unless otherwise modified so search engines don't see them as outbound links)
  • Reciprocal links could increase or decrease your PageRank. For example, a page with a PageRank of 6 exchanging links with a page with PageRank of 2. The PR6 page will most likely result in a loss of PageRank, while the PR2 will receive a boost in its PageRank.
  • A website's maximum amount of PageRank is distributed between its pages by internal linking. In another words, the maximum amount of PageRank possible increases as the number of pages within the site increases.
  • Outbound links to banned websites will result in a loss of your PageRank. Therefore, be careful who you link to.

.

The goal is to have as much relevant inbound links (sites that are relevant to your site with similar keywords) as possible and to reduce outbound links the best we can. This way you can have many websites casting votes for you (sharing their PageRank) without leaking too much of your own PageRank to others.

.

The Importance of PageRank

.

PageRank plays an important role on your search engine listing, with some conditions. To make it easier to understand, consider the following scenario:

.

Two pages (on different websites) are competing for the same search keyword. Both websites have high keyword density for the competing keyword. The page with higher PageRank will result in better search engine result position (SERP).

.

As you can see, PageRank is not the only factor that affects your search engine result positions. Things like keyword density are also taken into account. Also, the maximum amount of PageRank you can possibly have is determined by the number of internal pages and the internal linking structure of the website.

.

Conclusion

.

The best way to increase your PageRank is to ignore it and focus on building the quality of your website. Have good website internal structure, quality content, and good keyword density will pay off in the long run. One-way inbound links will grow in time. The best sites with the highest PageRank have never worried about PageRank. they simply do their best to increase the quality of their website content that people love to link to.
